IKOMA PLATEAU COSMOS FESTIVAL
Kobayashi, Miyazaki
The Ikoma Plateau in Kobyashi is famous for its flowers; in the spring, it’s covered in a carpet of yellow broccoli flowers, and in the summer, purple salvia. But Ikoma is best known for its autumn bloom. Every October, about 100 million cosmos from 17 different species begin to flower.
During this time, the Ikoma Plateau Cosmos Festival is held. Apart from enjoying the multicolor blossoms, visitors can sample local produce and foods from other regions in Japan, as well as shop for flowers and plants. On certain days, the Festival stays open into the night when the cosmos fields are illuminated with lanterns and colored lights, followed by music performances and firework displays.
At an elevation of 540 m (1,770 ft), the plateau offers visitors magnificent views of Kobayashi City, the Nishimoro Basin and the Kirishima Mountain Range. Apple-picking is also a popular activity at this time of year and can be enjoyed at the farm across the road from the plateau.
